Tips for Coping with Anxiety Attacks

Even if they only last a few minutes, anxiety attacks are uncomfortable and sometimes scary.  However, coping with anxiety attacks is possible if you know what to do.  To get you started, here are a few tips for coping with anxiety attacks and preventing the attacks completely.

  • Understand anxiety attacks- The first tip for coping with anxiety attacks is to understand as much as you can about them.  The more you know about them like how do they start, what actually happens in your mind and your body during an attack, etc. can help you come up with a better treatment plan.  The internet is a great way to get a lot of helpful, free information on anxiety attacks.  So, take the time to research all that you can about anxiety attacks.

  • Don’t try to fight them- Your first instinct during an anxiety attack is probably to fight it, but this is the exact opposite of what you should do.  Coping with anxiety attacks is much easier if you don’t fight them.  That will only cause you more anxiety and cause the attack to escalate and last longer.  If you can, try to stay calm and let the attack pass.  If possible, try to distract yourself so your thoughts aren’t consumed with the attack.

  • Work on prevention- Coping with anxiety attacks is great, but preventing anxiety attacks is even better.  So, once you learn how to cope with your attacks where they’re not as severe or as frequent, you might try to learn ways to prevent anxiety attacks.  This will not be easy at first, but once you know some techniques, they will become much easier the more you practice them.  Over time, they will become second nature for you.

  • Get outside help- One of the best tips for coping with panic attacks is that you don’t have to do it alone.  Even just talking to someone you trust can ease the burden and make it easier to work on preventing and even eliminating panic attacks.  Obviously, it would be even better to get advice from someone that has experience with coping with anxiety attacks.  If you don’t know someone like this, you might consider joining an online forum for advice and support.

These are just a few tips for coping with anxiety attacks.  When you understand how anxiety attacks work and what causes them, it’s much easier to prevent them, which is the ultimate goal.  Since you want to stop anxiety attacks altogether, no just learn to live with them.
